Are Cowboys offensive struggles serious?

OXNARD, Calif. – For the fans, it was enough. It didn’t matter that it was just training-camp practice. The offense executed the two-minute drill to perfection, finishing in five plays with Tony Romo’s(notes) red-zone touchdown pass to nfl jerseys Jason Witten(notes). The crowd erupted.
There was another chance to celebrate, minutes later, when Miles Austin(notes) hauled in a deep rainbow for a touchdown. For many fans, it was the first time they saw the 2010 version of the Dallas Cowboys score a touchdown. The team’s offense has caught a lot of bad press after failing to get into the end zone in its first two preseason games.
After their loss to the Oakland Raiders, the Cowboys moved to their second training-camp location in Oxnard. The players expected to benefit from the cooler climate and the grass practice fields, but play didn’t immediately improve. In its second California practice, the offense had one of its worst showings of the preseason. As a result, coordinator Jason Garrett held the unit back for an extra 15 minutes after the final whistle blew in order to walk through plays again.
“We’re gonna repeat plays if they’re not right,” said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, whose Cowboys face the Chargers in preseason action Saturday night. “In training camp, we’re installing stuff and the defense is installing stuff, sometimes it’s sloppy and it’s messy. You have to fight through that and play better than we did.”
Poor play, particularly in the red zone, has plagued the Cowboys offense this preseason.
Against the Bengals in Canton, Ohio, Dallas started at its own 35-yard line and drove all the way to the 2 before throwing three incomplete passes and being forced to kick a field goal. In the loss to the Raiders, the first-team offense again trotted into the red zone on its initial possession. Then came a sack, a 1-yard completion and another sack. Dallas settled for a field goal. On the second possession, it Bears jersey settled for another field goal.
Additionally against Oakland, the running game was grounded, with Marion Barber(notes) and Felix Jones(notes) combining for 12 yards on five carries, and the passing game producing just four completions while allowing three sacks. So far, the first-team offense is 0-for-4 inside the red zone this preseason – and that was with a healthy offensive line. Right tackle Marc Colombo(notes) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this week and is expected to be out until the season opener against the Redskins. Left guard Kyle Kosier(notes) sprained his right MCL in Wednesday’s practice and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Despite these performances, several players took issue with the criticism, particularly about the problems inside the red zone. Running back Tashard Choice(notes) said the preseason “don’t mean nothing.” Well, what about the last time the Cowboys were in a game that meant something? They got shellacked at the hands of the Vikings – and failed to score a touchdown.
Romo was even more unequivocal than Choice.
“Wait until you see our red-zone offense in the regular season, you’ll love it,” the quarterback said. “We’re not showing you anything yet.”
When Garrett was asked if he’s keeping most of the playbook to himself, he shed a little smirk as if he were concealing state secrets. “There are certain things we may or may not do in the preseason,” he said.
Many teams run bland offenses in August so they can bring fresh plays in September, when it counts. But vanilla play-calling doesn’t explain all preseason problems, which is Panthers jersey why they were forced to “stay after school,” as Jerry Jones called it, that day in practice. Jones, Garrett and head coach Wade Phillips were pleased with how the players responded, particularly in the two-minute drill that led to touchdowns to those two Pro Bowl targets.

They key going forward will be how the offense responds to its poor preseason performances. No one is questioning the talent on the team. Romo has plenty of weapons. At receiver, he has established targets in Austin and Crayton along with Roy Williams, who is eager to improve, and rookie Dez Bryant(notes), who is vying to take Williams’ spot. They’re three-deep at running back with Barber, Jones and Choice. At tight end, Witten caught 100 passes last season and Martellus Bennett(notes) is one of the best backups in the league.
If the offense takes off, Garrett will still have the problem of making sure each of those players is happy with the amount of touches he’ll get. Crayton joked that Garrett should “Treat it like a video game, man, and give everybody the ball,” but that is impossible in practice.
“Everybody understands that,” Garrett said. “Everybody understands that there’s only so many plays in a game and only so many runs and so many passes. They have a good football jerseys feeling for that, and there’s a healthy competition among our guys to work hard and battle for playing time and then the opportunity to get the ball.”
Of course, those questions come later. The Cowboys must first find a way to get fans cheering for plays that happen outside of practice.

Tulowitzki hits with his heroes

As a kid, Troy Tulowitzki(notes) idolized Nomar Garciaparra(notes). He had posters of him on his bedroom walls, he imitated him in Wiffle ball and, when he was old enough to suit up, he wore No. 5.
Garciaparra made Tulowitzki believe it was possible to play shortstop and still be offensive-minded. And when he transitioned from college to the pros, Tulowitzki switched his jersey to No. 2 in honor of football jersey another hard-hitting hero, Derek Jeter(notes).
When Tulowitzki was a senior in high school in 2002, Baseball Digest declared that the “era of the shortstop” was underway. Jeter and Garciaparra led a group that also included Alex Rodriguez(notes) and Miguel Tejada(notes), following in the footsteps of Cal Ripken Jr. as offense-first shortstops.
“Growing up, you remember that that was the new wave of shortstops,” said Tulowitzki, who is in his fifth season with the Colorado Rockies. “You didn’t lose too much defensively, but you’d get some offensive production. I think that’s really why I looked up to those guys. I thought to myself, ‘Hey, I don’t want to be just a good fielding shortstop, I want to hit, too.’ ”
Originally, there wasn’t even a shortstop in baseball. The position was birthed just before the Civil War, and historically has been much more about defense than offense. Then Ripken came along and won eight Silver Slugger awards and even the 1991 Home Run Derby. Garciaparra won back-to-back batting titles at the turn of the century, and then Alex Rodriguez (while with the Rangers) set a new standard in 2002 with 57 home runs, 142 RBIs and 389 total bases. He was the first player to lead the majors in all three categories in almost 20 years.
And he was a shortstop.
But as it turns out, the era of the slugging shortstop was more an anomaly than an evolution. The prevalence of steroid use was certainly part of it, but don’t discount the rarity of discovering such a player.
Look around the league now and Jeter, despite showing some signs of age, is the only member of that original era still producing at the position. The next generation seems to have just two players in the mold – Hanley Ramirez(notes) of the Marlins and Tulowitzki.
“It’s a very short list,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of Browns jersey the elite offensive shortstops. “Those three guys might be it.”
The offensive shortstop has become such a rare commodity that teams are doing whatever they can to scout them and then, when they think they’ve found one, sign him as soon as possible. That’s why the Blue Jays and the Red Sox rushed to sign Cuban shortstop prospects Adeinis Hechavarria and Jose Iglesias, respectively, soon after they became eligible.
“It’s much more common to find a shortstop prospect these days who can run a little or hit with gap power than a guy with true pop,” one National League scouting director said. “A rugged guy like Tulowitzki who can hit in the middle of the lineup and also be a plus defender doesn’t come along often.”
Tulowitzki’s contract reflects his value. He’s in the third year of a six-year, $31 million deal he signed after his second season, when he helped the Rockies to the 2007 World Series. At its signing, the deal was the largest ever for a player with fewer than two years of major league service.
Although he’s missed nearly 100 games the last three seasons because of injury, Tulowitzki is a .289 lifetime hitter with a slugging percentage well over .500 the last two years. On Wednesday he drove in the winning run against the Atlanta Braves to cap a record comeback. The Rockies won 12-10 after trailing 10-1 in the third inning.
Tulowizki knows that his all-around excellence – Baseball American rated him last month as having the second-best arm among shortstops beyond Rafael Furcal(notes) – will be an asset when he negotiates his next contract as well.
“It’s a great opportunity for myself,” he said. “I think it gives the team an advantage when you can put the shortstop in the middle of Bengals jersey the lineup. I could stay here my whole career, or if I do become a free agent, I think it will attract a lot of people – all that I can bring to the table every day.”
Despite his talents, teams doubted Tulowitzki’s ability to play shortstop in the majors, even though it’s the position he’d played his entire life and even though he was so good at it at Long Beach State that Evan Longoria(notes) was moved to third base. Several teams told him they would select him if he were willing to play third. He wasn’t.
“I wanna be different, I wanna be great,” Tulowitzki said. “I don’t want to be average. I want to be one of the best players in this game. Some people are afraid of that. Some people don’t want to be the best, they don’t want that pressure, but I want it.”
The Rockies made him the seventh pick overall in 2005 and have been overjoyed by his development.
“It is rare,” Tracy said of finding an offensive shortstop. “He completely over-profiles as a defensive middle infielder. It’s rare. It’s something that comes along maybe once in a managerial career. Power-wise, he profiles a little bit better than Jeter. That’s not taking anything away from Derek, but he’s a little bit different offensively than Jeter. …

GE Healthcare moving work to Texas, Mexico

GE Healthcare is moving some of the manufacturing at its Tower Ave. facility in Milwaukee to sites in El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico.
The move will result in the layoff of football jersey about 29 employees, according to a letter the company sent to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The layoffs won't happen before Oct. 25 and are currently not scheduled to begin until about Jan. 1, the letter says.
"We anticipate the total number of involuntarily impacted employees will be less than 30, as some employees may elect to retire or depart the business voluntarily, or find positions in GE or (GE Healthcare)," the company said in a statement. More than 25% of New Orleans Saints jersey the manufacturing employees at the facility are eligible for retirement or early retirement, the statement says.
The affected facility, at 8200 W. Tower Ave. on Milwaukee's northwest side, has about 500 employees, the company said. It will continue to make monitoring systems and software for health care and diagnostic imaging after the selected operations are transferred.
GE Healthcare has about 6,000 employees in southeast Wisconsin, a spokeswoman said.
The company's statement addressed the question of New England Patriots jersey why the layoffs were happening despite signs the economy is rebounding.
"These decisions are not made lightly. While the economy appears to be turning around at the present time, it is important that the business take the necessary actions to remain competitive and position itself for long-term growth," the statement says.

Harley considers moving work to Kansas City

Deep in union contract talks, Harley-Davidson Inc. confirmed Friday it could move its Milwaukee-area manufacturing to Kansas City, Mo., if it cannot get a labor agreement that cuts millions of dollars in local production costs.
It's one scenario that Harley is considering as the company gets closer to deciding whether it will keep about 1,700 manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin or move them elsewhere. The decision, according to the company, hinges on the outcome of nfl jerseys negotiations that are taking place with the United Steelworkers of America and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Harley-Davidson has told union members it wants to slash about $54 million a year in production costs here and have a more flexible workforce that can respond quickly to the seasonal demand for motorcycles and changes in the economy.
Should the negotiations fail, Harley could move its powertrain operations - which manufacture motorcycle engines and transmissions - to a company plant in Kansas City that currently assembles motorcycles and makes some engines.
Then, motorcycle assembly work would be moved from Kansas City to an existing Harley-Davidson plant in York, Pa.
The company has a short list of alternate sites for the powertrain operations if it can't get a labor agreement, said spokesman Bob Klein.
"I can tell you that Kansas City is one of those scenarios," Klein said. He did not name any others.
The company expects to make its decision by mid-September. It is negotiating with the unions for a combined contract that would take effect April 1, 2012.
Harley-Davidson has plants in Menomonee Falls and Tomahawk that are affected by the current negotiations. Under the scenario described by Klein, the powertrain operations in Menomonee Falls would move to Kansas City. Harley's headquarters would remain in Milwaukee, according to the company.
The United Steelworkers did not return Journal Sentinel calls. But an International Association of New York Jets jersey Machinists official in Kansas City said he hopes the unions in Wisconsin can reach an agreement with Harley-Davidson.
"My first choice is not to try and pull work from the Milwaukee union employees," said Tony Wilson, president of Local Lodge 176 in Kansas City. "But obviously if the company chooses to leave the Milwaukee area, we would do whatever we could to move the work into our plant - should the company make that decision. We have to try and support our own members and the local economy here in Kansas City."
Harley-Davidson has operated its 358,000-square-foot plant in Kansas City since 1998. The plant employs about 700 people who assemble motorcycles and build some engines. It also has about 100 salaried employees.
It's too early to gauge how the Kansas City plant would be affected by gaining the powertrain operations and losing assembly work, according to union officials.
"I don't know enough about the company's plan to say whether it would be a screwed-up mess or not," Wilson said.
Union officials say the scenario sounds familiar, given that the company successfully used a similar strategy last year in Pennsylvania to achieve labor concessions in York. Under duress, the International Association of Machinists accepted a seven-year contract that eliminated almost 1,000 jobs in York but kept the factory from being moved to Kentucky.
Companies across America are using similar tactics, said Frank Larkin, an IAM spokesman.
They are taking advantage of a sour economy to do radical restructuring, Larkin said.
In 2009, Kansas City was eliminated from a list of cities where Harley-Davidson might have built a factory to replace the York operations.
The current threat to Milwaukee may be a bargaining ploy, but it's still a plausible scenario, said Phil Gorham, an industry analyst with Morningstar Research.
"A feasible alternative strengthens the company's hand," Gorham said.
Analysts say the company would benefit from tighter manufacturing operations and a more flexible workforce.
It has a good bargaining position, given the lackluster economy and cities' clamoring for jobs, said George Van Horn, senior analyst for IBIS World Inc., an economic research organization.
The established workforce is in a very difficult situation, Van Horn said.
But moving manufacturing operations isn't simple. It can take a company years to iron out the wrinkles and get the benefits.
"It's not like moving a baseball team, where you put all of New York Giants jersey the equipment on a truck and head to the next town," Van Horn said.
State officials have said they would offer incentives to keep Harley-Davidson from pulling its manufacturing from Wisconsin. The company says its focus, for now, is on lowering production costs and getting a more flexible workforce.
"If we can't reach an agreement here, we would need to move the production operations," Klein said.

How hard will USC be hit?

LOS ANGELES – The NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions has 10 members and each of them is well aware of the reputation the organization’s de facto “jury” has earned through the years.
The NCAA goes light on big schools (who are known to cheat more often and with more intensity) and drops the hammer on small ones (who are more likely to have bumbled their way into trouble). Or, as Jerry Tarkanian famously surmised: “the NCAA was so football jersey mad at Kentucky, it gave Cleveland State two more years of probation.”
The current group has done little to reverse this perception.
It’s been years, if not decades, however, since the Infractions Committee ruled on a case as high-profile as the one involving the University of Southern California football and men’s basketball programs. ESPN reported that sanctions, if any, will be announced Friday. USC officials say they don’t expect a ruling before next week. If it wants to change its image, this is the case the committee has been waiting for.
Stretching over four years, the case that centers on Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo has gained such national focus and caused such entrenched positions among fans that it feels like a referendum on the NCAA itself.
If USC skates, will anyone ever get severely punished?
So here’s a new one to consider as a major program sits in the infractions committee crosshairs – the possibility of an overreaction.
Could USC actually deal with harsher penalties because of the publicized nature of the allegations and the fame of the team? Will the Infractions Committee, desperate to prove they aren’t toothless in the face of a big-time program, actually lay down the law in a way inconsistent with its recent precedent?
Could, for once, a Kentucky-esque school actually play the Cleveland State whipping dog role?
If not, if the committee sticks to its recent trend of punishments, there isn’t much to worry about for the future of USC. At least as long as Lane Kiffin can coach.

The committee’s report is done, all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed. USC will have it soon. Its basic structure and conclusions were completed weeks ago. The final release was delayed, according to a source, by the sheer length of a report that’s expected to run well over a hundred pages. What normally takes the committee six-to-eight weeks to complete, took 14.
What to read into that is anyone’s guess.
Common sense says the NCAA didn’t investigate both the football and basketball for years and then took months to write a report only to declare there were no violations. If there was nothing there this would’ve been done a long time ago.
That there will be some sanctions is a forgone conclusion. It’s the severity of the penalties that the infractions committee in particular, and the NCAA as a whole, will be judged.
USC has already self-imposed penalties on the basketball program and there’s reason to believe much more will be done there. Not that many will care. This is a football case.
While there remain USC fans who believe in the program’s innocence, or at least deniability, the rest of Seattle Seahawks jersey the country long ago presumed the Trojans guilty. An endless series of investigative stories, a book, television interviews, multiple settled lawsuits and tepid denials from the folks involved will do that.
The USC case has taken on a life of its own, followed, debated, raged at and even mocked like few others.
There are the oversized allegations – Reggie Bush’s family received a house (a house!) or at least got to live in one rent free. There are the dueling marketing agencies that allegedly provided extra benefits in an effort to sign him. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars in not just alleged payouts, but in the settling of lawsuits that include gag orders.
Then there are the only-in-LA moments, such as Bush eventually dating Kim Kardashian, whose father was a defense attorney for O.J. Simpson, himself a Heisman Trophy-winning Trojan tailback.
There’s the 2007 movie “Blades of Glory” where the character played by noted SC fan Will Ferrell is named “Chaz Michael Michaels,” an obvious shout out to Michael Michaels, one of the many colorful central figures in the Bush case.
Then there are the stakes: a Heisman Trophy, a BCS championship and the legend of some iconic teams that defined college football in the middle of the decade.

The Committee of Infractions, much like an actual jury, can only rule on the evidence presented, not potentially powerful, yet unproven, accusations. That often plays a part in weaker than expected sanctions.
There are two key elements to this case that will determine penalties.
First is whether Bush received extra benefits from the marketing agencies vying for his business. The scope of the evidence against Bush and his family is overwhelming – on-the-record testimony, hotel receipts and a brazen flaunting of the rule book.
When Reggie Bush posed on the cover of Dub Magazine with his tricked out car and his parents wrote their name in the driveway of the home they were allegedly living in rent free, they weren’t doing much to cover their tracks. Even devout Trojan fans have a hard time arguing Reggie didn’t get something.
With the NCAA you can’t be a little bit pregnant on eligibility issues. Fans nationally expect the Infractions Committee to deem Bush ineligible. Anything less is almost inconceivable and would create palpable outrage. There’s simply no way they’ll convince anyone of Bush’s innocence.
If Bush is ruled ineligible, then the committee could declare USC must vacate all of its victories from the 2004 and 2005 seasons (Bush’s sophomore and junior years, when the marketing agencies flocked).
That would cause the suits at the Bowl Championship Series to decide whether to vacate the Trojans 2004 title – USC would be technically winless. At the same time, the Heisman Trust could pull Bush’s 2005 trophy.
If the BCS title is vacated don’t expect anyone else (namely Auburn) to be named the champ. There simply won’t be a BCS winner that year. The Heisman may give the trophy to runner-up Vince Young, the Texas quarterback though. A lawsuit from Longhorn fans to force that action might not be out of the question.
Vacating victories is embarrassing (ask John Calipari) but it doesn’t have any effect on the program going forward. And it’s not like the games weren’t played or the memories of the championships aren’t still ingrained in the memories of Trojan fans.

In terms of sanctions that might impact USC’s future, the Infractions Committee would have to determine that coach Pete Carroll or the administration knew, or should’ve known, about Bush receiving extra benefits. Carroll ran a loose ship in LA, one of the marketing agencies employed Bush as an intern and the NCAA has taken great interest in what assistant Todd McNair may or may not have known.
Still, this part of the case isn’t as cut and dried. The Infractions Committee could clear USC and greatly reduce the penalties doled out.
What might really frustrate non-SC fans is that even if the NCAA rules USC culpable, it really doesn’t have many sanctions in its arsenal that can do much. Over the last half dozen years, the Infractions Committee has applied penalties that have proven ineffective at slowing down major programs.
Probation is meaningless – Alabama is on it right now and they just won the BCS title. Postseason bans have fallen out of favor in football and unless it stretches for multiple seasons (highly unlikely) it will have no bearing on recruiting.
Taking a team off of television just isn’t happening in this era of big money network contracts. Remember, seven of the 10 members of the committee still work in (or are recently retired from) college athletics. They aren’t killing the golden goose of San Francisco 49ers jersey TV.
Even scholarship and other recruiting restrictions aren’t going to matter much to a program such as USC. Say the NCAA took away 12 scholarships over a three-year period – a high number based on recent cases. So USC signs 21 great recruits instead of 25?
And since so many top high school players hail from within driving distance of its South Central campus, cutting back on paid official visits or coaches days on the road won’t do much either.
Just Wednesday the Trojans picked up a verbal commitment from touted quarterback recruit Cody Kessler. The Bakersfield native didn’t care to wait two days to hear what the NCAA had to say. He wasn’t bothered that USC already has four-star QB recruit Max Wittek in the fold.
He turned down a bunch of other Pac-10 offers anyway. That’s the power of USC right now.
So here’s the one fear for Troy.
The Infractions Committee knows that if it hits USC with what it traditionally considers a significant penalty, almost nothing is going to happen. The backlash from around the country will then be overwhelming. The cries about situational justice and Cleveland State and institutional corruption will be endless.
This is the Reggie Bush case, after all.
So eager to avoid the criticism, the Infractions Committee could proactively hit harder than normal, returning to the days when the NCAA was a powerful, vengeful, feared organization. What if 30 scholarships are gone over a three-year period? What if there is a multi-year bowl ban? What if the committee got medieval and decided, once and for all, to make an example of someone big and powerful?
Likely? Nope.
The infractions committee knows the national mood though. They know the lack of cheap nfl jerseys faith fans have in the system and their committee. They know this is the most publicized case in years.
It’s human nature to try to prove your point.
