49ers’ coordinator carousel keeps on spinning

Cowboys jersey
Another out-of-nowhere plot twist in the 49ers' season-long soap opera occurred Monday with the announcement that Jimmy Raye had been fired as the team's offensive coordinator. With the guillotine coming down on Raye, QB coach Mike Johnson(notes) moves up the coaching ladder to become the Niners' nfl throwback jerseys
eighth offensive coordinator in eight seasons. Offensive assistant Jason Michael will replace Johnson as the QB coach.
Beleaguered head coach Mike Singletary reportedly had given Raye a vote of confidence shortly after his team suffered through a 31-10 shellacking at Arrowhead Stadium — the Niners' second abysmal showing on the road in the season's first three weeks. When the news hit that Raye was whacked, there was immediate speculation that Singletary might have been given an ultimatum from management to make the move or else.
But after staying up all night watching film and thinking about his team, Singletary told the local media early Monday afternoon that it was his decision alone to fire Raye, whose alleged play-calling shortcomings were highlighted in a scathing Yahoo! Sports report a few days after the Niners lost the season opener in Seattle, 31-6.
"I looked at the overall view of where we are and where we need to go and felt that I needed to make the move," Singletary said, adding that he didn't seek input from anybody else. "One thing I want you to understand here is, if I make a decision, it's my decision."
The PFW Spin
One would think eight coordinators in eight seasons is enough already. But on a team that has struggled under Singletary to establish a specific offensive identity, such changes have become par for the course. While Singletary indicated that it was his decision to can Raye, who had been an offensive coordinator for six different teams in his long career, team insiders can't help but wonder otherwise. Johnson was widely assumed to be the "rat in the building" that Singletary referred to shortly after the Yahoo! exposé that caused such a stir both locally and nationally. Is it Bears jersey
really possible that Johnson and Singletary can operate on the same page moving forward?
There are many close to the team that have been adamant in their belief that the Niners' offensive personnel might be better suited for a more pass-oriented spread/shotgun style, especially in the case of QB Alex Smith. But Singletary has remained a staunch smashmouth proponent, with an emphasis on establishing an imposing run game.
It will be interesting to see how the offense looks this Sunday in Atlanta, when the Niners have the unenviable task of facing a Falcons team coming off a stirring upset of the Saints. It's also very much worth noting that the Falcons obliterated the Niners, 45-10, in San Francisco last season, outgaining them, 477-279.
As for Raye, who reportedly had a knack for making changes in offensive meetings without consulting coaches, it could be another case of the Niners not pulling the trigger soon enough on a festering problem. The same thing happened with Scot McCloughan, the former GM who had issues behind the scenes that suddenly Bills jersey
came to a head with his shocking exit from the team only five weeks before the 2010 draft.
What numerous league observers have said for a while now is that the Niners could really benefit from a veteran head-of-football operations to work side by side with Singletary, who remains a relatively unproven commodity as a head coach, and solidify an organization that continues to fly wildly by the seat of its pants.
In the meantime, the drama just keeps on getting heavier.

Dungy visits Jets’ Ryan after criticizing language

NEW YORK (AP)—Tony Dungy came away from his meeting with Rex Ryan “really, really liking” the brash New York Jets coach, but disagreed with the team’s decision to play Braylon Edwards(notes) five days after his arrest for drunken driving.
Dungy, an analyst for NBC’s “Football Night in America,” said football jerseys
Sunday night that he spoke with Ryan on Saturday morning after criticizing him last month for his foul language during HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series.
He watched practice at the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, N.J., before the team left for Miami to play the Dolphins on Sunday night. Dungy told “The Dan Patrick Show” last month that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should talk to Ryan about his excessive use of obscenities. A disappointed Ryan said Dungy unfairly judged him and invited the former Super Bowl-winning Colts coach to spend a day with the team.Colts jersey

“We did talk about the language and we got that squared away, and I got his Minnesota Vikings jersey
thoughts on it,” Dungy said. “To be honest, we ended up talking a lot more about the Braylon Edwards situation.”
Edwards was benched for the first quarter of the game against the Dolphins after being arrested on drunken-driving charges last Tuesday. The Jets decided to not suspend the wide receiver, and said the league would determine the appropriate discipline once the legal process played out.
“I asked him what he was going to do, and he basically explained—just like he did to our crew—what he was going to do,” said Dungy, who added he would’ve benched Edwards. “He told me he felt Braylon had been punished enough. He had been embarrassed in the media, is going to lose money in free agency, so he didn’t feel like he had to pile on him.”
The Jets opted to not challenge the collective bargaining agreement, saying any punishment they would dole out other than what the NFL eventually decides, could violate the CBA.
“I don’t necessarily agree with that,” Dungy said. “I think you have to discipline players. You Indianapolis Colts jersey
have to let them know what you expect. When I did it, I wasn’t worried about the collective bargaining agreement when I coached.”
Dungy cited his own example, when he cut Colts starting defensive lineman Ed Johnson(notes) in 2008 after he was arrested for possession of marijuana.

26 sep 10 Cowboys vs. Texans

BIG ISSUE: After they struggled their way through the preseason, the Cowboys told everyone not to worry about meaningless games. When they lost on a last-second holding call in Washington, they partially blamed their woes on a patchwork offensive line. Last week, they were humbled by football jerseys
the Bears. Now, as the Cowboys stare down their in-state rival and a potential 0-3 start, it's time for Dallas to prove they are indeed a contender in the NFL.
The Texans have already shown they are the real deal. Matt Scab, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster and Mario Williams are playing like Pro Bowlers, if not All-Pros. In Week 1, Houston erased the Indianapolis Colts, 34-24. In Week 2, coming off the emotional victory over Indy, the Texans battled back from down 20-7 to beat a Redskins squad which had taken down the Cowboys just seven days before. The Texans are for real, and they'll be trying for their first 3-0 start in franchise history on Sunday.
NUMBERS, PLEASE: The so-called experts say run the ball more. Give the ball to Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tatar Choice, and the Cowboys will be all right, they explain. But the statistics say otherwise. The Cowboys have run the ball 42 times for an abysmal 139 yards this season. Barber is averaging 3.7 yards per carry, Jones is averaging 3.0 and Choice is averaging 2.8. Quarterback Tony Room said it'd be nice to have a running game, but he added, "But if you're not getting the production out of it, you're also banging your head against the wall to just keep doing it." The Cowboys need to do whatever they can do to win a football game.
The Texans offense is as advertised this season. Running back Arian Foster leads the NFL with 300 rushing yards. Quarterback Matt Scab set a franchise record for passing yards last week, throwing for 497. Receiver Andre Johnson leads the team with 15 catches and 191 yards. Even their kicker, Neil Rockers, is tied for the NFL lead among kickers with 22 points. After the Cowboys made Jay Cutler look like John Always last weekend and allowed 27 points to the Chicago Bears, they're going to have to make some serious adjustments against Houston this weekend.
ONE-ON-ONE: Mario Williams is a beast. There's no other way to put it. He leads Vikings jersey
the AFC in sacks, ranking second in the NFL with four. He's 6 feet 6 inches, 290 pounds and runs a sub-4.8 40-yard dash time. Somebody is going to have to block him on Sunday. Doug Free will likely take him most of the game, but Marc Colombo should see a lot of him as well. The Cowboys have done a good job against pass rushers Julius Peppers and Brian Crapo this season, but Williams is in a league of his own.
Take your pick this weekend on the defensive side of the ball. The pass rush against Scab, the secondary against Johnson or the linebackers against the NFL's leading rusher Foster - any of those matches are critical. But the one to keep an eye on will be Demarks Ware against Houston's new left tackle Rashid Butler, who is replacing suspended tackle Duane Brown. Ware only has one sack this season, but he's been around the football nearly every play. If he has his way with Butler, things will be a lot easier for the Cowboys at noon on Sunday. Steelers jersey

SUPPORTING ROLE: Starting cornerback Mike Jenkins will probably play for the Cowboys this weekend, but he could be somewhat limited by a bruised knee. Orlando Scandisk is next on the depth chart, and he already has a significant role manning the slot. The Boise State product has no pass deflections or picks this season, but he does have five tackles. The Cowboys could really use a big game from him against Houston.
Andre Johnson says he'll play this weekend despite a sore ankle. But like Jenkins, he'll probably feel the effects of that injury, even if it's just a little bit. The Texans will ask Jacoby Jones to pick up whatever slack Johnson leaves on offense. Jones burned the Cowboys for five catches, 63 yards and one touchdown in their preseason meeting. In the first two games of the regular season, Jones has eight catches for 82 yards and a score.
HEADSET GAMES: Everybody wants the Cowboys to run the ball. But this weekend, they might be better served putting it in the air again. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning threw for 433 yards and three touchdowns against the Texans in Week 1. Redskins QB Donovan McNabb threw for 426 yards Colts jersey
and one score against them in Week 2. At some point, a quarterback who throws for more than 400 yards against the Texans will come out victorious.
The Texans will undoubtedly try to ram the ball up the gut on the Cowboys all afternoon on Sunday. Foster ran for 110 yards and a touchdown in a preseason game against the Cowboys. Imagine what he might be able to do when the game actually counts.

Jones needs to act if Cowboys lose

Indianapolis Colts jersey
The recent appearance of Jerry Jones at Yankee Stadium, occasioned by the unveiling of George Steinbrenner’s unabashedly gargantuan likeness, was impossible to ignore. Steinbrenner’s death leaves Jones as the most prominent owner in American sports.
Oh, you think not?
Wake me when Mark Cuban wins something.
In the meantime, note the obvious points of cheap nfl jerseys
comparison between Jones and Steinbrenner. Each revived a moribund franchise as a national brand. They embraced Bigness, of both themselves and their teams, observing, in an almost Arthurian sense, little, if any, distinction between the two. Steinbrenner was the Yankees; Jones is the Cowboys. Both are loved and despised in roughly equal measure. Each availed himself of municipal bonds to build grandiosities a pharaoh would envy, though after being in both, I can report with certainty that Cowboys Stadium not only offers taxpayers and fans more bang for the buck, it's clearly superior to that thing in the Bronx. It's also the best thing to happen to boxing since Manny Jacquie knocked out Oscar De La Hoya.
So let’s keep score, as it’s something that owners – who are, after all, merely adolescent males with tons of cash – would surely do. Jones is in his 21st year as owner of the Dallas Cowboys. His teams have won three Super Bowls, but only one playoff game since 1996.
By his 21st year with the Yankees, Steinbrenner’s teams had played in four World Series, winning two. He was in the midst of his second banishment, and his ownership had seen 21 managerial changes, to wit: Ralph Hook, Bill Virden, Billy Martin, Dick Hawser, Bob Lemon, Billy Martin (II), Dick Hawser (II), Stick Michael, Bob Lemon (II), Stick Michael (II), Clyde King, Billy Martin (III), Yogi Berea, Billy Martin (IV), Lou Pinellas, Billy Martin (V), Lou Pinellas (II), Dallas Green, Becky Dent, Stump Merrill and Buck Showalter.
Still, I can’t help but thinking it’s time for Jerry to really emulate the man he called “an inspiration.” A loss this Sunday might warrant the canning of a coach or two.
For all the excesses of Steinbrenner’s regime, patience isn’t always a virtue. This season’s narrative arc is predetermined, its finale scheduled for the 6th of February, 2011, at Jerry’s pyramid in Arlington. Once again – based on the talent of the Cowboys’ roster – it was widely supposed, if not hoped for, that his team might qualify as the first to host a Super Bowl.
But now, the perennial favorites are 0-2 going into Week 3 as three-point dogs to an outfit called the Texans.
And again, you ask: what’s wrong with Dallas?
To this point, not Jerry Jones. Most hands-on owners – Steinbrenner, Cuban, and Dan Snyder – hire general managers to protect themselves from their own ignorance and insulate themselves from blame. There’s nobody today who could do what Jones is doing as his own GM. The Bengalis’ Mike Brown isn’t in his league. Al Davis is long past his prime. Whatever Jones’ shortcomings, it’s not procuring talent. The Cowboys have plenty.
Jones didn’t respond to several requests for an interview. That's just as well. Besides, I understand. It can’t be that much fun being a three-point dog to Houston.
Still, I recall our single conversation, a couple of San Francisco 49ers jersey
summers ago at the training camp in Oxnard, Calif. It was a brief dissertation on the subject of “finishing.”
“The Giants made 52 yards in the second half and we still didn’t finish it,” he said, referring to the previous year’s upset playoff loss to New York.
The Cowboys were the more talented team then, and remain abundantly talented. But this finishing thing is still a problem. A single playoff win in 14 years shouldn’t lessen the burden of proof on Coach Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett, who turned down head coaching jobs to serve as Jones’ $3 million-a-year offensive coordinator.
“Last year was last year,” said Phillips.
That was the same day, the summer of 2008.
Phillips is now in his fourth season as Jones’ head coach, a run that promises to go as long as or longer than anyone but Jimmy Johnson. Still the Cowboys couldn’t finish the first half of the first game of the 2010 season. Phillips – or was it Garrett? – called for a short pass to Tatar Choice, who was stripped of the ball, a play resulting in the Redskins’ only touchdown in a 13-7 win.
Then there was the holding penalty to negate what would’ve been the winning touchdown on the last play of the game.
Tony Room threw for 282 yards. Miles Austin had 10 catches, 146 yards. Last Sunday, Room threw for 374 yards, albeit with a couple of interceptions. Austin had another 10 receptions for 142 yards. With two games evidence, the Cowboys are up 16 minutes in time of possession. But they have given up 79 more penalty yards than their opponents, and seem to have no idea how to use their running backs.
Did I mention they’re 0-2?
The 2-0 Texans, on the other hand, know how to score, putting up 32 points a game.
Steinbrenner used to pitch a fit if the Yankees lost to the Red Sox or the Mets.
Wonder what Jerry Jones will do if the Cowboys fall to 0-3 by Buffalo Bills jersey
losing to the Texans.
I know what he should do. You don’t get an outrageously proportioned plaque being a nice guy.

24 sep 10 No more Mike Singletary interviews for Dennis O’Donnell

Not in the contracted interview he does weekly for KPIX in San Francisco. Not from Dennis O’Donnell, any way.
The station pulled an interview O’Donnell did with the 49ers nfl jersey
coach from its Web site last week after the coach grew heated at different points. O’Donnell will be replaced by Kim Coyle, according to Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News.
Niners spokesman Bob Lange described the trip to the bullpen by KPIX as a “joint agreement.” The team has editorial input, also known as control of the production because of the contract. Per the report, Coyle will interview Singletary in person while O’Donnell did them via satellite from the station.
Singletary snapped at O’Donnell during the interview and he was besieged by questions about the team’s communication, or lack of it following the blowout loss in Seattle.
“I say things that I feel and I do have to do a better job at not letting the media bait me the way they did last week in one particular incident,” Singletary. “I do have to do a better job at that and I have to be smarter in that situation.”
Hey, maybe a change in interviewers will lead to a change on the field for the now 0-2 Niners.
OWING MILLS, Md.—Baltimore Ravens rookie nose guard Terrence "Mount" Cody expects to play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns after being held out of the first two games following arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
Cody is no longer on the injury report.
“I feel it’s doing better,” Cody said. “I’m not 100 percent yet, but I feel like it’s a lot better than it was. Hopefully this week, by the way I practice, they’re going to let me play.”
Cody said he was held out of the first two games as a precautionary measure.
“I feel like they wanted to be safe about it,” he said. “Don’t let it swell up or let anything else happen to it. I feel like if nothing happens with my knee and stuff, I feel like this is the week I can play.”
New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) obviously doesn't get it.
In legal jeopardy after his DUI arrest since he's already under Chargers jersey
probation for his misdemeanor assault incident in Cleveland last year, Edwards downplayed the impact of his actions on the Jets' reputation.
“I don’t understand the black eye that this would put on the organization,” Edwards said. “Because this isn’t a representation of what this organization is about. This isn’t what Rex Ryan, Mike Tannenbaum and Woody teach. It’s isn’t. This is a situation that I’m in, that I put myself in. So I don’t see how this could be a black eye for them. More so be a black eye for myself if anything.”
According to the New York Daily News, Edwards seemed flippant during an interview today.
He said he wouldn't make an issue out of it if the team decided to deactivate him.
The Jets have said they're going to not start him, but he'll play.
"I'm sorry,” Edwards said. “I'm human. I'm not the first person to make a mistake."
Edwards didn't have much of an excuse for not using the Jets' car service.
“I have my own car service that I use all the time,” Edwards said. “I never drive to the city. I don’t know my way around the city. I don’t like driving to the city. Yesterday was probably the third time I’ve ever driven to the city of New York.”
Meanwhile, Jets coach Rex Ryan said he was very upset about the incident.
And he's fed up with the team's behavior in general, and he let the team know about it.Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

“Quite honestly, I’m basically tired with dealing with some of Bills jersey
these issues,” Ryan said. “I’m tired to the embarrassment to our owner and this organization. Let’s just end it. Let’s stop it. .. We don’t need to be that team. This team works too hard to be looked at in this light. It’s kind of an embarrassing moment for the organization.
“We are a disciplined football team. I think our football team has learned our lessons. …I’m not going to hold people’s hands 24/7. We’re professionals. We need to act like professionals. I think Braylon is a good man. I think Braylon made a mistake."

Van Buyten earns Bayern Munich welcome win

Dallas Cowboys jersey
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Daniel van Buyten’s last-gasp goal gave Bayern Munich a welcome boost as the champions came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim.
Bayern fell behind after just 36 seconds but Van Buyten hit home the winner a minute into stoppage time for a team which had not scored in three matches.
The victory also had a negative side as Franck Ribery limped off nfl throwback jerseys
with an injured right ankle.
“We came here to have a good match and after the early goal we came back together and worked hard,” said Van Buyten.
“We are very satisfied and happy about the way things look in the standings.”
Bayern is seventh in the league with eight points from five rounds, seven points behind surprise leader Mainz, which beat Cologne 2-0 thanks to Lewis Holtby’s goals in the 72nd and 91st.
Mainz, which travels to Bayern Munich at the weekend, leads the standings with a perfect 15 points with five victories.
“Why should we set unbelievably high goals? Let’s just go game by game,” said Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel, whose team has not lost in 10 matches dating back to last season.
“The first half that we played today was the best football we have played since I have been here. We could hold our own in the (English) Premier League with that passion.”
Bayern came into the game at Hoffenheim with the worst attack in the Bundesliga and watched as the hosts took the lead after just 36 seconds after a defensive error by Bayern. Sebastian Rudy stole the ball from Diego Contento on the right and passed into the area where Vedad Ibisevic slotted in off the near post.
Bayern continued its game plan of plenty of possession but Hoffenheim nearly made it 2-0 after 42 minutes with Sejad Salihovic blasting his free kick against the right post.
Munich finally ended its 333-minute scoreless run with 28 minutes to play as Hoffenheim keeper Daniel Haas pushed Ribery’s shot into the path of Thomas Mueller and the Germany international converted the rebound.
Ribery, who has dealt with a series of injuries over the past couple of Saints jersey
seasons, had to be helped off the field.
“We can’t say yet. I think it’s a serious injury but we will look at it more tomorrow,” said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal of Ribery’s injury.
Hoffenheim tried desperately to hold off Bayern’s attacks but the visitors eventually broke through a minute into stoppage time. Ivica Olic headed a free kick into the path of Van Buyten, who pushed the ball over the goalline with his thighs.
Van Gaal believed his men would come through in the end.
“It may be strange, but we built up so much pressure. Maybe it’s a bit of luck too,” said the Bayern coach.
After three wins to start the season, Hoffenheim remained on 10 points for second place.
Hannover is third with 10 points after a 4-1 victory at home over struggling Werder Bremen, which has just four points.
Bremen meanwhile is in a downward spiral after a second straight disappointing loss in the league.
Clemens Fritz struck an own goal in the 11th minute which Werder captain Torsten Frings was able to cancel out with a penalty in the 36th minute—his 19th consecutive converted penalty since 2004.
Didier Ya Konan made it 2-1 in the 53rd, and was followed by goals from Christian Schulz (79th) and Mohammed Abdellaoue (92nd).
“We said last week that we played so bad and that we cannot play any worse. But we played maybe even worse in the second half,” said Bremen manager Klaus Allofs.
On Wednesday, Schalke plays at Freiburg; Bayer Leverkusen hosts Eintracht San Diego Chargers jersey
Frankfurt; Borussia Dortmund takes on Kaiserslautern; and Hamburg welcomes Wolfsburg.
In addition, Borussia Moenchengladbach entertains St. Pauli; and Stuttgart travels to Nuremberg.
