Another Way to Collapse" vs. Houston Texans

Perhaps Tom Walsh should have been demoted to placekicker or tight end.Costly mistakes on offense and special teams propelled the to their 10th loss on Sunday, falling to the Houston Texans, 23-14.Playing with an injured back, kicker Sebastian Janikowski was off-target on all three of Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
his field goal attempts. The 250-pounder missed a 53-yard attempt late in the first half, a 37-yarder early in the third quarter, and a 29-yard stab just six minutes later.Earlier in the week, the Raiders auditioned Paul Edinger, who had previously kicked for the Minnesota Vikings, and rookie Kurt Smith from Virginia. Though, on Thursday, Janikowski assured media that he would be ready for Sunday's home meeting with the struggling Texans."If I kick [today] I will be all right," he said four days before gameday. "Even if I kick Saturday, I'll be fine."It turned out he wasn't so fine. The nine points No. 11 left on the board were much of the reason why the Raiders fell short of their third possible victory on Sunday, but not the entire reason.Along with a struggling kicking game, the defensive side of the special teams unit also sent Oakland home without a win. The team allowed an 87-yard kick return at the outset of the second half that would lead to a Wali Lundy 3-yard touchdown run on the ensuing play. Then, early in the fourth quarter, cornerback Dexter Wynn returned a punt 58 yards to the Oakland 21-yard line. Had it not been for an open-field takedown by punter Shane Lechler, the Texans would have exchanged a 42-yard field goal for seven points. After both long returns, the Texans led by just three points.Credit the Raiders' defense, which held quarterback David Carr to minus-5 net passing yards. Houston's win marks the first time since 1981 a team came out on top after passing for negative yardage. The 27-year-old quarterback finished the day with just seven completions on 14 attempts for 32 yards, but was sacked five times for a loss of 37 yards. In all, the offense gained just 124 yards -- 178 yards less than Oakland -- and fumbled three times, losing two.As many as Randal Williams lost in the fourth quarter. The tight end, who caught six passes for 46 yards on the day, fumbled on two consecutive offensive plays, both of which came with the game within a one-score reach. The first fumble set the Texans up for a 47-yard field goal; the second set them up for a 39-yarder just two minutes, 25 seconds later. After No. 86 let the ball hit the turf twice, the score was widened to 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
23-14, and the Raiders were out of timeouts."You can't make mistakes that we made offensively and the mistakes on our coverage teams and expect to win against anybody," head coach Art Shell said following the game.It seems like the can only beat themselves.Want to be in the Raiders mailbag? Wide Receivers Commentary Week 12

There was a time -- not too long ago -- when the were brimming with talented wide receivers. That time was before the Art Shell era; it was when Doug Gabriel was still a member of the crew, when Jerry Porter believed in the offense, and when Randy Moss was "happy" with his team. Now, Ronald 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
Curry -- who was seemingly becoming a mere afterthought in the offseason -- has suddenly emerged as the Raiders' single bright spot on a dark, dismantled crew of wideouts. With already eight losses behind them and only six games remaining, let's take a look at how the Raiders can best utilize their current options at wide receiver. Swap No. 4 Jerry Porter for No. 2 Alvis WhittedPorter, who led the Raiders in receptions in 2003 and 2004, is currently fourth on the depth chart at wideout. Consequently, the 6-foot-2 receiver has seen the field very little this season, registering just one 19-yard grab in four games. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Alvis Whitted has recorded at least one catch in nine of the team's first 10 games. Whitted has 19 receptions on the season; however, the veteran is on the downswing of his long career and Oakland gains little future or immediate benefit from starting him. Al Davis offered Porter a $13 million signing bonus in 2005 to re-join his team -- not to sit the bench in favor of a 32-year-old.Swap No. 3 Ronald Curry for No. 1 Randy MossMoss may be the team captain on offense, but Curry plays like he is. Moss, however, has been targeted 78 times this season, while the acrobatic Curry has been thrown to less than half of that (37). Simply laid out, Moss catches just 42.3 percent of passes coming his way and his dropped seven, while Curry has caught 62.2 percent with just two drops. Most importantly, though, Curry has been bringing more to the table than Moss all season; he simply has been given less opportunities. With Moss' latest comments and Curry's recent success and reliability, Shell should fill Porter's spot on the bench with the self-interested Moss.Swap No. 5 Johnnie Morant for No. 3 Ronald CurryWith Curry shooting up to the number two spot, Oakland should test its youth in the slot, much like the team did with Porter from 2001-2003 and former Raider Doug Gabriel in 2004 and 2005. Morant has the size (6-4, 220) and the background to make an immediate impact in the rotation for Oakland. At Syracuse, Morant was the first wideout to register four-plus 100-yard outings since Pro Bowler Marvin Harrison did so back in 1995. With nothing more to lose, Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
Morant could easily replace the similar-sized Moss in the lineup, considering Moss has just nine receptions in the team's last four games.Final revamped WR lineup:1: Ronald Curry2: Jerry Porter3: Johnnie Morant4: Randy Moss5: Alvis WhittedWant to be in the Raiders mailbag? "Offense: This time, last year"

Close to a year ago, on Oct. 1, 2006, the met with the Cleveland Browns in their third game of the regular season.Much like this year, Oakland was 0-2 heading into its home matchup versus the Browns and trying desperately to avoid another defeat. All said and done, the Raiders were unable to do so, and the results weren't pretty. The Raiders dropped the game by a score of 24-21 and went on to lose 11 of their next 13 contests, finishing 2-14 on the season.A year later -- 357 days, to be exact -- Oakland found a way to win under the same set ofSteelers 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
circumstances. On Sunday, the Lane Kiffin-led Raiders held on to beat the Browns, 26-24, for their first win -- not third loss -- of the year. The victory can be attributed much in part to the drastic improvements made on the offensive side of the football. At this point, it's clear that the '07 Raider offense is much improved from the unit that hit the field just a year ago.Exactly how much better, though, is the Raiders' offense this year compared to the 2006 unit that fell to the Browns last season? To find out, simply begin each of the below statements with "at this time, last year."At this time, last year...... Oakland's front five had allowed 19 sacks through just three games. That's 6.3 sacks per game. This season, the O-line has surrendered a total of just nine, or three per game.... the Raiders' offense was netting a lowly 177 yards each game. This year? Nearly double that: 341.... the atrocious 'O' was 8 of 36 on third downs (22.2 percent). About 12 months later, Oakland has doubled that third-down percentage (20 of 45, 44.4 percent). ... Tom Walsh was calling the offensive shots. No further explanation needed.... running back LaMont Jordan had 49 carries for 183 yards, which included a 59-yarder in the team's third loss of the season. That's 3.7 yards per carry with the breakout run factored in and just 2.5 yards without it. This year, Jordan has 69 attempts for 350 yards, good for 5.1 yards per carry, and there's no fluke runs in that stat line.... no pass catcher on the Raiders' roster had recorded 50 or more yards receiving in a game yet. That's already been done four times by three different players this season.... Oakland averaged nine points per game. Now, the Raiders are good for 22.3 points every time they hit the field.... the team's quarterbacks were 27 of 69 (39.1 percent) for 326 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. This season, through three contests, Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper are 52 of 82 (63.4 percent) for 612 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.... Randy Moss was leading the team with 84 yards receiving. This year, three pass catchers (Ronald Curry, Jerry Porter and LaMont Jordan) have all surpassed that yardage total.... Art Shell's squad had picked up just 37 first downs in three games, or 12.3 per game. To date, Lane Kiffin's team has moved the chains 54 times, or 18 times an outing....Oakland's offense was on the field, on average, 25 minutes a game through three losses. Through one win and a pair losses this season, Oakland is winning the time of possession battle against its opponents, averaging over 33 minutes with the ball each game. That's a difference of eight minutes, or over half of an entire quarter.... Raider Nation was thinking NFL draft.... the Walsh-led offense reached the red zone just five times with one total score. This year, the Oakland 'O' has made it down inside the 20-yard line eight different times and has scored four times.... the Raiders'Steelers 36 Bettis Jersey
net passing total through three games, with sacks factored in, was 121 yards. Through the same amount of tries this year: 480 yards. That's a 297 percent increase. At this time, last year ... the were a year from respectability. ,

"Bye week banter"

With a slightly enjoyable, mostly painful bye week ahead in Oakland, here's a hit-and-miss list of thoughts for Raider Nation to chew on until their team resumes play on Oct. 14.Despite missing half of last weekend's game, running back LaMont Jordan still ranks second in the NFL in rushing with 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
424 yards. The Raiders, as a whole, rank first. In a divisional side note, Broncos running back Travis Henry, the loving father of nine illegitimate children, tested positive for marijuana on Thursday and now faces up to a one-year suspension. Henry, in an attempt to avoid the suspension, plans to sue the NFL. That's a good plan. Another good plan: Not smoking marijuana. Two of the top five interception leaders in the NFL are on Oakland's roster, 25-year-old Kirk Morrison and 24-year-old Thomas Howard. Both have three picks in four games.Yes, you read that second statement correctly. Travis Henry has nine -- yes, nine -- illegitimate children. What a role model.Oakland has 12 touchdowns this year. It had 16 all last season. The aforementioned Morrison, with three INTs and 25 tackles, was named the AFC defensive player of the month Thursday. With 261 yards rushing, backup halfback Justin Fargas has just 1 yard fewer than '06 NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson and two fewer than the Chiefs' Larry Johnson.Think LaMont Jordan is strictly a short-yardage back? As of today, the 5-foot-10, 230-pounder ranks second in the NFL in 10-plus-yard rushes with 14.Another side note: On third and short (under 3 yards), Jordan is a solid 5 for 6. That percentage ranks third in the NFL among all backs with at least five third-and-short attempts. It seems NFL.com has wide receiver Mike Williams' photograph mixed up with the Jaguars' 370-pound offensive lineman with the same name: Take a look. Funny thing is, if the Raiders' Williams keeps playing like he is, he may find himself on the bench, where he'll begin to slowly evolve into that player in the picture.Ronald Curry has seven first-down grabs on third down. That's tied for third in the league. The Raiders are winning the time of possession battle by an average of 5:12 each game. Only three teams can say they manage the clock better (the Patriots, Ravens and Steelers). At his current pace, ex-Raiders wideout Randy Moss will surpass 2,000 yards receiving. Still, it was a good trade for Oakland. Only a multi-faced player like Randy Moss can make that happen.Despite all the draft buzz, perhaps the two most important additions to the Raiders' roster this 4 Brett Favre White jersey
season came via free agency and trades. That is, fullback Justin Griffith from Atlanta (signed as a free agent) and defensive tackle Gerard Warren (acquired from Denver). At this pace, the Raiders will end the season with eight wins. They haven't reached eight wins in five years.Since I began writing this, Travis Henry has fathered his 10th illegitimate child. Just kidding, I hope ... , .

Schedule Kerry Collins

every game in the NFL should be treated as a playoff game. But, particularly for the , the first four games of the season should be treated like four isolated Super Bowls. The Raiders received a rather-generous season commencement on Thursday, as they will face off with the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers to kick off the 2006 season, with a Week Three bye dividing the games. In week one, Oakland will meet with the San Diego Chargers-one of the three divisional rivals who swept Oakland last season. However, unlike in 2005, the Chargers will be without the 2004 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Drew Brees. Instead, San Diego's 2004 first-round draft selection, Philip Rivers, will be under center. In his two-year career, the N.C. State alumni has attempted just 30 passes and thrown for 148 yards. To begin a new starting era, 24-year-old Rivers will have to travel into McAfee Coliseum on Monday, September 11th to meet with Oakland on their home turf in a nationally-televised game. Topping the Raiders under such a favorable condition may be as easy for Rivers as falling asleep on a bed of thumbtacks. Advantage Oakland.A September 11th win against San Diego would mark the Raiders' first week one victory since a 2002 team that finished the season 11-5. That Rich Gannon-led squad won their first four games of the season and finished the year as the Champions of the AFC. In 2006, Oakland will have an equally-promising opportunity to make an early four-game sweep. To say the least, Week Two should be very interesting. Oakland will head to Baltimore to meet with the Ravens, who are still without a clear-cut starting quarterback. This is where the "interesting" part comes into play. As of now, the Ravens are the only team to speak with ex-Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins about playing in 2005. If Collins becomes a Raven, the game will take on an entirely new meaning for the Raiders and their fans alike.Nevertheless, Week Two is another highly winnable game-even more so than Week One. Baltimore put up an average of just 16.6 points per game in a 2005 campaign where they won just six games. And although Oakland won two less games than the Ravens did last season, they averaged more points per game with 18.1. Plus, with Kerry Collins moved off the Raiders' roster and possibly on to the Ravens', you can tack on another six or so points for Oakland and take off the same number for Baltimore. In all seriousness though, with or without Kerry Collins, a 24-10 win over Baltimore sounds very pragmatic. So here they are: 2-0 heading into a Week Three bye. It seems almost to be a preconceived notion; however, the release of the 17-week schedule on Thursday is the main dynamic behind it all. Last season, the Raiders opened up the season playing New England, Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Dallas. Thus far, the Brees-less Chargers do not measure up with the AFC East Champion Patriots and the 2005 Ravens can't compete with the Chiefs by any stretch of the imagination.Who are the Philadelphia Eagles of 2006? The Browns. Like Baltimore, Cleveland also finished off last season with a 6-10 record. However, the Browns were even worse than the Ravens in the 2005 scoring column, posting a league low 14.5 points per game. Once again, following a Week Three bye, another highly-winnable game will fall into the lap of the Raiders.Just when you may have thought things couldn't get any easier for the Oakland, October 8th rolls around-a Bay Area fender-bender at San Francisco. One last time, the Raiders will play a team that averaged fewer points than their own club in 2005. The 49ers scored just 14.9 points per game last year-a number good for third-worst in the NFL.Of Oakland's first four opponents, three had records of 6-10 or less and have offenses that ranked lower than the 23rd-ranked scoring offense of Oakland in 2005. The other team, San Diego, has a rookie quarterback who would be facing a steep uphill battle away from home in Week One.The at 4-0? Based entirely on their last three seasons, it looks highly improbable. But based on their first four opponents, it's extremely possible.Four and ohhhouldn't that be sweet?!

Lane Kiffin should pick, and stick, with a QB

Who the ' starting quarterback will be for at least the next half-decade or so is no mystery. The organization invested a first overall draft choice and about $60 million ($31 million of which is guaranteed) on 43 Polamalu black jersey
former LSU standout JaMarcus Russell last April.Who will be the quarterback two weeks from now is much more of a mystery.Already this season, the team's top two quarterback options, Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper, have split six games each. The 28-year-old McCown started Weeks 1, 2, 3, 9, 10 and 13, while Culpepper has filled in the gaps. Notice the lack of a pattern. It's almost as if head coach Lane Kiffin has flipped a coin each week.In reality, though, most of the Raiders' weekly QB swaps have been thanks to injuries. McCown, just this season, has suffered injuries to his quadriceps, right index finger, right foot and left big toe. Culpepper, along with dealing with his recurring right knee troubles, also recently hurt his quadricep. The combination of weekly complaints from both passers has made for plenty of confusion both in and outside of the Raiders' locker room.If you think Week 14 will be any different, don't. Kiffin, as he has been all season long, has remained vague and imprecise on who will start under center Sunday."I don't know the health of Daunte right now," Kiffin told the Oakland Tribune on Monday. "Josh took a number of hits yesterday. We'll look at him and I'll have more for you on that."McCown started last week and stole the show in a 34-20 win over Denver, despite the debut of Russell in the second quarter. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder completed 14 of 21 passes for 141 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran the ball four times for 22 yards.Twelve games into the season, McCown and Culpepper have now started in an equal amount of games, and have put up very comparable numbers.McCown has completed 59.4 percent of his pass attempts for 901 yards, eight TDs and nine picks; he has also fumbled nine times, but lost only three. The 30-year-old Culpepper has completed a slightly worse 58.1 percent of his passes, but for more yards (1,331), with five touchdowns and five interceptions. He too has fumbled nine times and lost three. McCown, however, does hold the advantage in the sack department, being taken down nine fewer times this year. Both quarterbacks also hold 2-4 records. As displayed earlier in the season, McCown seems to be the desired choice of the 32-year-old Kiffin. He started the first three games of the season, until a left foot injury finally forced him to the sidelines. Kiffin even opted for McCown as the starter when he was dealing with a cracked index finger in his throwing hand and a sprained right foot at the same time.It may be time for the first-year head coach to make a choice and stick with it. Both quarterbacks will be free agents in the upcoming offseason, with McCown currently earning a salary of $4,004,400 (sixth highest on team) and Culpepper making $8,004,180 (highest by over $3 million). Kiffin doesn't have much to lose by picking one for the final four weeks of the season. At worst, it'll be a time to evaluate if that player is 4 Brett Favre White jersey
worth the team's trouble in 2008.Along the way, Russell could find his way onto the field. That, though, is completely under Kiffin's discretion, like it or not. It's only a matter of time until Russell starts every game. But, until then, Kiffin should make things easier and make up his mind.
